OpenShift Data Foundation¶
If you are looking at OpenShift Platform Plus (OPP) and are targeting ODF to be your storage provider, here's how to install it. This assumes your worker nodes have an additional data disk, as documented in the prerequisites.
Minimum Node Requirement
ODF internal mode requires a minimum of 3 nodes with available data disks for Ceph replication. A 2-node cluster cannot run ODF internal mode.
Install Local Storage Operator¶
- Go to Ecosystem -> Software Catalog -> filter for "Local Storage" -> click the tile
- Click Install
- Leave all the defaults and click Install
- Wait for the Operator to install
Install OpenShift Data Foundation¶
- Go to Ecosystem -> Software Catalog -> filter for "OpenShift Data Foundation" -> click the tile
- Click Install
- Leave all the defaults and click Install
- Wait for the Operator to install
- Wait for the menu item on the left hand side to show Storage has a new Data Foundation item
- Go to Storage -> Storage cluster -> click on "Configure Data Foundation"
- Click on "Create Storage Cluster"
-
Select "Create a new StorageClass using local storage devices"
-> Click Next
-
Select both
Use Ceph RBD as the default StorageClassandSet default StorageClass for virtualization-> Click Next
-
Use "odf-local" for the LocalVolumeSet name, click "Disks on selected nodes" and select the nodes with the disks
-> Click Next
-
On the capacity page, wait for the calculation to happen. Select Balanced or Performance mode.
-> Click Next
-
Ignore security selections.
-> Click Next
-
Click Finish
Verify¶
oc get storagecluster -n openshift-storage
oc get pods -n openshift-storage
oc get storageclass
oc get volumesnapshotclass
Expect the StorageCluster to show a healthy phase, Ceph pods Running, and StorageClasses such as ocs-storagecluster-ceph-rbd (block) and ocs-storagecluster-cephfs (filesystem). If you selected "Set default StorageClass for virtualization" in step 9, you will also see ocs-storagecluster-ceph-rbd-virtualization — this StorageClass carries the storageclass.kubevirt.io/is-default-virt-class: "true" annotation and is used by OpenShift Virtualization as its default storage class. ODF uses Ceph on local disks — dm-multipath is not required for ODF itself.
For OpenShift Virtualization, confirm a StorageClass is annotated as the default virt class (storageclass.kubevirt.io/is-default-virt-class: "true") if you selected that option in the wizard.
Install via YAML (Alternative) (click to expand)
If you prefer a CLI-driven install, the ODF operator and StorageCluster can also be deployed with YAML. See the OpenShift Data Foundation documentation for the full manifest-based installation procedure. The hub-and-spoke guide also shows a YAML-based ODF install on SNO.
